History of this Landmark Site

1832, the Ohio & Erie Canal was completed bringing new settlers and jobs to our area. The settlement on the west side of the Cuyahoga River was incorporated as “Ohio City on March 3, 1836. Following nearly two decades of independence from Cleveland, and the “Bridge War of 1837” the village of Ohio City was annexed to Cleveland in 1854.

1904, cottages were built for the deaconesses of the Methodist Episcopal Church on the northwest corner of W30th and Bridge. From this location they provided support services to the community and the newly arriving European immigrants.

1920, the Methodists replaced the cottages with a comparatively large structure known as West Side Community House (WSCH). Although the building itself is not a designated historic structure, it is located in the historic district of “Ohio City”.

The building opened its doors to the community as a settlement house. Twenty-seven (27) bedrooms housed the deaconesses on the third & fourth floors.  Sleeping porches, play rooms, a domestic science room, kitchens & dining rooms; along with a kindergarten and the Superintendent’s office occupied the first & second floors. A gymnasium & game room provided more activity space from the lower level. Good Will Industries, shared the lower level, and conducted their business from the South West corner of the building.

In the mid 1960’s, the property was transferred to West Side Community House (WSCH) as a separate 501 C3 non-profit full service agency.

Late in 2006, West Side Community House relocated to 9300 Lorain Avenue and moved from 3000 Bridge Avenue after One Hundred Two (102) years of service.

The redevelopment of the West Side Community House (WSCH) will maintain the property’s important historical contribution to our community for future generations.
